So, we have officially started the "Princess Celebration Week!"

I questioned her repeatedly to make absolutely sure that she wanted this party.

We have experienced an incredible week!

Charlie has been extremely sick for the past 3 weeks.

Last Saturday, Charlie asked, "Can you talk to God and see if He will help me?"

This week we asked our church, family, and friends for prayer.

Charlie is completely well!

GOD is so good!

Tonight, our church had a special drama/musical.

It was so wonderful!

GOD richly blessed me with an amazing family and friends to support me through this journey.

The first day of orientation.

I was soooo overwhelmed and wondered,

"What in the world was I thinking to do this crazy thing?"

At that moment, the LORD sent me a BIG BLESSING...

VICKI!

She has been an incredible friend and encourager.

We met frequently to work on papers, projects, presentations, etc.

Now when we get together it will be ALL FUN and NO WORK!

She is another friend that GOD placed in my life.
Her sweet, kind heart reminds me of Christ's love daily.
I am so grateful for her friendship and example!

Well, Jennifer and I go way back!
We graduated with our ADN back... in the BIG hair days. LOL!
She is the one who encouraged me to go back to school and get my master's.
YEP! I blame her! HAHAHA!
After my unfortunate bicycle accident, I asked GOD,
"Ok, are YOU trying to get my attention? Is there something you want me to do?"
A couple weeks after that prayer, I ran into Jennifer.
She was teaching and Samford.
She encouraged me to work as a clinical nursing instructor.
So, I am grateful that she allowed the LORD to use her in answering my prayer!

Well, she deserves this diploma!
I cannot list all of the wonderful things she has done for me to HELP me through this journey!
She has helped with the BLESSINGS, cleaned my house, cooked TONS of food for my family, listened, PRAYED, advised, etc.
Her devotion to me has been an example of Christ's devotion to us.
She has not wavered.
She has not complained.
NOT EVEN ONE TIME DID SHE COMPLAIN!
(I need to learn from her!)
I am eternally grateful for all NaNa has done for us!

My First 5K

Some of you know that my Grandaddy passed away in August.

He had Colon Cancer.

He was the strongest and sweetest man I have ever known. I know these are interesting adjectives to put together. But, that was Grandaddy.

He loved God and his family.

In Birmingham, we have a 5K every year to raise money for Colon Cancer awareness.

The funds raised go to education, testing, and early detection of this horrible disease.

My cousins and I started talking about doing the run.

HA! HA! HA!

I have not ran anywhere since the 1 mile required in P.E. in 8th Grade.

YES...8th Grade!

Why would anybody run for fun?

I mean, do they not have anything better to do?

Well, so I decided to run...with my family...in memory of Grandaddy.

So, I realized that a 5K was ONLY 3.1 miles.

HA!

That is nothing!

I ran 1 whole mile in 8th Grade and that was...

HMMMMM...

a VERY LONG TIME ago.

My students (who run) recommended "Couch to 5k."

And I have to admit that it is a great way to get into running...

unless you start 3 weeks before the 5K...

and skip a week of training for Spring Break.

I did run MOST of the 5K.

Approximately 2.8 miles.

Finished in an UNBELIEVABLE time... for me. :)

Unfortunately, my knee is still hurting from the unaccustomed activity.

But, I believe that I am going to start back on the "Couch to 5K."

SHOCKING!

I know.

But there is something about seeing the finished line.

I thought about the references Paul makes in the Bible about finishing the race.

When I could see the finished line, I started thinking about my Mom and Grandaddy.

They both ran a good race.

So, it was more than physical and emotional...

it was a spiritual experience for me.

Keeping my eye on the finish line...

on the PURPOSE that God has called me to.

For those who do not know, I have had a significantly negative experience with bicycles.

I will not bore you with the details.

He did fall one time and had his first scraped knee.

Can you believe that?!?!?

My child was 3 years old before his first scraped knee.

In China, he was always bundled up in many layers of clothes.

He was protected against the scrapes and bruises. It was a bit traumatic for him.

But he is fearless, so he is now accustomed to scrapes.

Our Sunday

We had a wonderful Sunday at church today!
Charlie stayed in his class for 20 minutes without me.

Last Sunday, he lasted 10 minutes.

He is progressing well, but we don't want to push him.

He has had so many changes in the last few weeks.

The Girls are making adjustments.

A little bit of jealousy has surfaced, but that is totally normal. Their "Little Mama" instincts have kicked in. Sometimes they have to be reminded that Charlie has a "Big Mama," too. :)
I think this picture sums up Charlie's attitude about things.
He has come into this family with his arms and heart wide open.
He has embraced all of us.
He is absolutely amazing!!!

HMMMMM...

Something happened to the Auburn ornament on my parent's Christmas tree!

My Mom loved Auburn!

We were all Auburn fans at some point. She had a way of convincing us.;)

She passed away when I was 18.

Then the Lord blessed our family with my second Mother (aka NaNa).

She says she adopted me! :)

Well, NaNa is an Alabama fan.

As many of you know, Greg and the Girls are... well... let's just say they are completely committed to the University of Alabama.

In fact, the first phrase Charlie learned was, "Roll Tide!"

NaNa still puts the Auburn ornaments on the Christmas tree out of respect for my mom and PaPa.

Well, my Girls do not like it!

While we were in China, SH hid behind the Christmas tree and pealed the Auburn logo off the ornament.

We are so excited to be home with our family!

Charlie adores his sisters! It is like they have always been together.

He listens to them and shares his toys.

HG has already turned a backpack into a diaper bag. It is packed with toys, snacks, and a bottle.

I told Charlie on the plane that soon he would have more than one Mama. I said,"Remember this moment, because your life is going to change. You'll have 2 Lil' Mamas!"

He said, "OK." Like he understood what I was saying. LOL!

I want to thank NaNa and PaPa for taking care of the girls while we were gone. I also appreciate my mother cleaning my house, making homemade soup and vegetables, and taking ALL my dirty laundry home with her. Y'all are such a blessing to us!

I am also grateful for Aunt Kelly keeping our blog updated while we were in China. I e-mailed her the pics and posts. Most of the time I had issues with the computer, but she worked so hard to keep everyone updated!

Aunt Lyn, thanks for getting Skype so I could talk to our family on Christmas Eve. It was so good to hear every one's voices! OH! And Charlie thanks you for the blue sucker at the airport! :)

We walked around Shamian Island today.

We had an incredible dinner with 2 other adoptive families. It was AMAZING food!

Authentic Chinese food! The best we have had since we arrived in China! I hope we can go again before we leave. Ike (a guide who worked with one of the families previously) brought us to this splendid restaurant. The Applegates and Bishops made the dinner even more special! Their children are so good to Charlie. They all took turns playing with him! We have been so blessed to meet such wonderful people!

Dinner at Cow and Bridge

Not too busy today. We went to Jade Market and walked around in Guangzhou. It was a beautiful day! We had dinner at the Cow and Bridge Restaurant. Another adoptive family joined us. It was so nice to talk with them.

Charlie is very dramatic. If he doesn't like a certain food, he will pretend he is choking. It was scary at first. I almost did the abdominal thrust on him! He was coughing and gagging. I pulled him out of the high-chair and he started laughing at me. I waited a while and he was breathing fine. I offered him a second bite and he started doing it again. He hung over the side of the high chair. (That was after only offering him a bite, he didn't even take it.) When I put the spoon down, he started laughing and dancing. Just a tiny bit dramatic! =)

Today we went and had his TB skin test read. It was negative! Praise the Lord!!

Greg is finishing the paperwork with our guide.

Tomorrow we go for our Consulate Appointment.

Wednesday we go to the Safari Park.

Thursday we pick up his VISA and go to Hong Kong!

Friday... We head to Alabama!!

Merry Christmas From China!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

Santa left presents outside our hotel door for JiJi. He loved the toys!!

Then we had to go for his medical exam. It really upset him to be in the clinic. He cried a silent cry, just sobbed. He did well with the doctors and his TB skin test. The guide told him if he didn't cry during the exam, he would get him 2 pieces of candy. As soon as he had his skin test, he held out his hand for the candy and laughed.

He took a 3 hour nap, then we went to eat at Lucy's, an American Restaurant.

VERY GOOD grilled cheese and french fries! We were able to meet other adoptive families and talk with them for a while. It was truly refreshing!

We saw the girls open presents from Santa via Skype. Greg & I both cried. The girls kept saying, "Don't cry! We are fine!" They are doing so well! Greg and I are the ones having a tough time. It was a blessing to see them open the presents, but we miss them terribly! I'm ready for my rooster and monkey to be hanging on me again!!!

I only have 2 pics from today... Charlie hiding in the closet.

We stayed close to the hotel today. Tomorrow (Christmas Eve) we will go to a park and walk around Nanjing a bit. We leave for Guangzhou tomorrow night. I feel bad about leaving Charlie's Province. His life is going to be totally different. I know it will be better, but he has had a life before we adopted him. He probably will not remember anything from here, other than what we tell him. And the information we have is seriously lacking.

We miss all of our family & friends, most of all our girls. We are having a wonderful time, but we are ready to get home to our girls so we can love on them, and so they can meet their new brother!!!!

I have a bunch of pictures from the play area at the mall connected to the hotel. Charlie loved it! He met a friend while we were there. He is the little boy in the spinning seats with him.

A bit about Charlie:

- He is very busy!

- Loves to cuddle and snuggle.

- Can make a gun out of anything.

(Right now he is using puzzle pieces for his guns.)

- He is really tough!

He touched the hot iron this morning and burned his hand. No tears, just "OH!"

- Never meets a stranger. I know this is not a good sign with an internationally adopted child but he loves to talk to everyone! Sounds like his Daddy doesn't it?

- You know he's tires if he stops talking.

- Loves chocolate, french fries, McDonald's chicken nuggets, watermelon and BACON!

- Laughs a lot!

Our Great Adventure

Charlie is so full of personality! He talks to everyone on the street. He will continue to say, "Ni Hao!" until someone answers him. He is persistant. He is sleeping and eating very well! Only has a melt down if he doesn't get his way.

Today, Greg and I decided to be adventurous. We decided to spend the day as a family walking the streets of Nanjing, with no guide. Just us and Greg's awesome sense of direction. It was so much fun! We walked down the tiniest alleys and talked to interesting store keepers. We ended up in a market area, which was fun.

We had a lot of people staring at us. It bothers Greg, but it is their culture to stare at things or people that are different. Some of the people were very kind and others just turned their backs to us.

I have included pictures from our journey. Some are of Charlie in our hotel room, making funny faces. There is a picture of him in cotton with snowmen. Let me just tell you, this was an ordeal!

This display is in our hotel. It has a white styrofoam fence around it. Well, Charlie walks up and knocks down the fence. Every time I pick it up, he knocks it back down. One of the managers came over and insisted I take his picture inside the fence. (What was he thinking!?!?!?)

Charlies knocks over the snowmen and picks up the fake candy pieces to throw. I grabbed them just in time. I got a picture and told him to come on! He lays down in the cotton and started rolling all over the display. I could not stop laughing. He was laughing so loud that he drew a little audience. A lot of people shaking their heads at me. Of course, Greg had gone upstairs to get a heavier coat for Charlie and missed the whole show. He did make it back in time to clean the cotton off Charlie. He asked, "Did he roll around in it or something??" DUH!!!

Tuesday Stuff

He slept well last night, but had a blow out. It was so bad we had to call housekeeping at 4:30 this morning. Yeah, they were thrilled to help us with the ordeal. Greg tipped her well, but how well can you really tip someone to come clean up poo at 4:30 in the morning? I'm pretty sure any amount would not be appropriate. However! A positive came from this... He now realizes he likes to take a bath.

We went to the Civil Affairs office and signed a bunch of paperwork. They asked us questions of why we were adopting from China, did we know he has medical conditions, and would we ever abandon him. I'm always so surprised to have these questions asked. I mean, he is my son.

MY SON. And I am already Mama Bear about him. One of the directors grabbed him up and started walking around the building with him. I followed her everywhere, watching her every move. I had to keep telling myself to stay calm. And finally, (I'm sure God had something to do with it) she placed him down and he ran to me. It was the greatest relief! Then she fussed at me because he did not have enough clothes on. That is pretty standard here though so I didn't take it to heart. I got that a lot with HG. SH's province was hot, so no one cared if she wore shorts.

We did go buy some clothes today. A blue and red jacket with a dragon on it. Definitely masculine! (Unlike the 'delivery' outfit) 4T's are so big they keep falling off of him.

I cannot wait for everyone to meet Charlie! They called him "Ji-Ji" - sounds like G-G. He answers to it and we can say it, so we are not pushing the "Charlie". We say it frequently, but he is not responding to it yet.

We have our CHARLIE! He is AMAZING!!!

We were sitting in the Civil Affairs office and he walked through the door and ran straight to us! He was literally running and smiling at us. It was unbelievable! He stayed right with us and loved on us. His primary nanny said that he has been very happy about his family and has been ready for us to come get him. When we left the office, he grabbed Greg's hand and pulled him out the door, waving, blowing kisses and telling his nanny, "Zigh jian! (See you again!)" He was ready to leave!

He walks around saying "Ni Hao!", while shaking hands with all the ladies. I'm afraid he may be a politician one day.

He has only cried one time, but we found that food makes everything better for him.

He loves playing football and hitting Greg. He LOVES me to tell him "No!". He just laughs at me and does it anyway.

He has been busy trying to figure out our computer and cameras.

He is so busy, so I know he will give the girls a run for their money!

We have been so richly blessed. Charlie is a true delight!

We have survived the first bath, but boy was it traumatic! He screamed and cried the whole time. He kept trying to climb out of the tub, but somehow we all managed to survive.

I think he may be a bit of a hoarder. He will not let anyone touch his toys or any of his things. He keeps them in a pile in the corner. I believe this is due to being in the orphanage and not having anything.

He really loves food! I mean, REALLY LOVES FOOD!! He ate and ate. His belly looks like it may pop! We gave him a bite of a donut and he threw his hands in the air like he was praising God! He is full of personality (and food). He is SO wonderful!!

Hello, from China!!

We made it! So far, our flights have been great. It didn't seem at all like we were on a 12 hour flight. (Thank goodness!) ALL of our luggage met us in Beijing. YAY!!
Greg and I even wandered out on our own in Beijing Friday night. All of the hotels and cities are decorated for Christmas. Everyone is playing Christmas music, in English. It has been so nice!
We are now in Nanjing, where we will meet our BLESSING, Charlie. We meet on December 20th at 2pm. (China is a day ahead...) We don't have many pictures to share yet, since most of our time has been spent on airplanes, but we will post some as soon as we can.
Please pray that our meeting/bonding with Charlie goes well!!!

After arriving home from Kelly's Wedding, I received an incredible e-mail.

Sheri, from Gifts to China With Love, e-mailed that she had received new pics of our boy!

What a wonderful surprise!!

We received 11 new pictures!!!!!!!!!!!

And he is smiling!

That was a big burden to me! In all of his pics, he never smiled.

The Girls smiled in most of theirs, so it gave me a peace about their situation.

On Wednesday morning, I prayed and gave God all my worries about our LOA, Charlie not smiling, travel, school, work, etc. EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!

HE has so blessed and honored that prayer!

Friday night, my cousin, Kelly, married the love of her life.

Anthony (or Ant-B as he is affectionately called by the Girls) is a wonderful man.

It seems as if he has always been part of our family.

He and Kelly had hoped to marry before our grandfather passed away.

Unfortunately, that did not happen.
They honored Grandaddy's memory by having pictures of him in a special area by the Bride's cake. It was so hard not having him there. He would have loved all the music, dancing, fun, and fellowship that we enjoyed.

Today is the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival in China. It is also called the Moon Festival.

It is the Fall equinox. The next time the moon will be at this point is 2029.

Normally, the Chinese celebrate with lanterns and eating moon cakes.

The Girls are not crazy about moon cakes, so we went with a Southern alternative...

Crazy, Busy Day

Thursday was CRAZY!

I told the Girls to be ready to run after school,

and BOY did we!

School dismissed and we ran to Dance for SH.

After Dance, we ran to Gymnastics.

After that, it was Open House at the Girl's school.

WHEW!

We did not have time for both of the Girls to change,

so they had to wear their leotards to the school.

They were NOT happy about this.

(Because you know they are teenagers...WAIT! They are 5!)

We barely made it to Open House.

BUT, we made it!

Being Salt and Light

My heart was truly thrilled today!

One of my former students came by to visit.

This summer, Carole Ann spent 2 weeks working at

Maria's Big House of Hope

in Luoyang, China. This is an orphanage for special needs children.

They actually perform surgeries and recovery at this orphanage.

(MBHOH was built by Steven Curtis Chapman and his wife Mary Beth.)

Carole Ann is an absolutely, wonderful, young lady!

Her heart truly yearns for God and His will in her life.

I could talk about her amazing qualities all day long!!

She truly blessed me with her visit!

She brought a book of pictures from her trip.

It just reminds me of how much I miss China! I would live there (if I could convince Greg)!

The pictures of all the children were so precious!

My heart is so burdened.

I am burdened for Charlie to be home.

But, it is something more than just my son.

My heart is burdened for more. There are more...

So many more! So many hurting!

So many without food, clothes, shelter, hope, and love.

So many without HIM!

So many without the One and Only True Hope.

So many without the One and Only True Love.

When I see their faces, I think of Him.

I think of how much He loves them and desires only good for them.

My heart is burdened for them to know Him!

A burden for them to know Jesus' Love.

How can I make a difference?

How can I help these children?

Our Pastor talked about letting God's light shine through us,

so that we can be the salt of the earth.

How can my light shine for these children on the other side of the earth?

I believe God places concerns/ burdens on our hearts for a reason.

So, now what do I do with this?

What do I do?

I'm praying and reading His Word.

We were blessed to have Judge Fuhrmeister perform SH's re-adoption.

He was the Judge for HG's re-adoption, as well.

It was so good to see him again!

Saturday was Game Day in Alabama!!

The Girls were THRILLED to bring the Gingerbread Man (GBM) home today!

Each weekend, someone in their class is selected to take the GBM home.

A year ago, TODAY...

HG was in UAB Hospital having a heart procedure.

We were praying...crying...praying...praying...and praying.

God has been so FAITHFUL.

TODAY...

HG was turning flips and walking on the balance beam.

Our God is so GOOD!

Grace is defined as "unmerited favor."

I am so grateful for HIS Grace!

Our family has had a difficult few weeks.

My grandfather passed away last week.

I "thought" that I was prepared for him to be with God,

but

HONESTLY,

you cannot truly imagine how hard it will be.

The Lord continues to open my eyes and heart to Him.

Though I have been exposed to death, I have never realized the true miracle of death.

I am also more aware of the importance of PRAISING Him in the midst of the storm.

Our God is PERFECT in ALL He does!

My Heavenly Father has sent many precious jewels during this difficult time.

ONE of these jewels is...

WOOOOHOOOO!

We are DTC!!!

That means our dossier is on the way to China!!!

Another step closer to Charlie coming home!

Honestly, I would LOVE to be in the sun and the sand...right NOW!!

This cold weather is not fun at all!

SUNSHINE...that is what I miss.

I NEED SUNSHINE!

But, then I saw this picture.

My heart longs to return to China.

HG frequently asks, "Isn't it time to go to China?" or

"Mommy, are you ready to go to China. I AM!" or

"Let's go to Nanning. I miss it."

I'm just going to continue to pray. Maybe we will be there sooner than we think.

The Girls were angels in their school Christmas Program.

They had practiced singing "Away in the Manger" and "Silent Night" for weeks.

When it came time to sing, only one would sing.

The Girls are always climbing on something.

When they saw the Dalmatian, it was only a matter of time.

The Girls love Minnie Mouse.

HG does not like Mickey, though.

There was a pin with Mickey Mouse dressed in an Auburn football uniform.

Now, she does not want anything with Mickey on it.
